Through her ancestor Charles II, Agnes Mary Eyston, the second wife of Col.. Charles M.T. Western, has two lines of descent from Edward IV through his eldest legitimate child Elizabeth of York, queen of Henry VII. In addition, through her father, Agnes has a definite descent from Edward IV's illegitimate son Arthur Plantagent, Viscount Lisle, and through her mother she has a probable descent from Edward IV's illegitimate daughter Dame Margaret Lumley.

[*1] Most online databases, including Roglo and Genealogics, make 'Anne' Ogle, the wife of Sir John Delaval, a daughter of Ralph, 3rd Baron Ogle (1468-1513) and Margaret Gascoigne. The genealogist W. Percy Hedley in his Northumberland Families, in both his Ogle and Lisle articles, says that Anne, daughter of the 3rd Baron Ogle, married first Humphrey Lisle of Felton, who died before 1542, then married Sir John Delaval (d. 1572). Hedley in his Ogle article (p. 149): "The 1563/4 visitation pedigree only credits Ralph, [3rd] lord Ogle, with one child, a son Robert, but the 1575 pedigree gives him two other sons William and John, and three daughters...Anne wife of Humfrey, son and heir to sir William Lisle" later on p. 151, Hedley says, "The early visitation pedigrees of the Ogle family are very inconsistent about the sons of the 4th baron and his wife Anne Lumley. The pedigree of 1563/4 has internal evidence that it was very out of date at the time of this visitation...The 1575 pedigree, on the other hand, is completely up to date...This pedigree can therefore be taken as reasonably accurate in respect of the children of the 4th lord. These are given as" four sons Ralph (died young), Robert the 5th Lord, Thomas (died young), Owen (4th son) and one daughter "Agnes".

The Ogle pedigree from the 1575 Visitation is on p. 88-89 of Visitation of the North Part IV. It does give a daughter to the 3rd Baron "Anne maried to Humfrey son and heir to Sir William Lisle", and a daughter to the 4th Baron "Agnes", with no marriage. No mention of any marriage to a Sir John Delaval. Hedley in his Lisle article (p. 226) says that Sir William Lisle and his son Humphrey participated in several raids in 1527, freeing prisoners from the gaol at Newcastle, stealing cattle from the sheriff of Northumberland, etc. This led to Sir William's execution in April 1528, when "Humphrey and apparently his younger brother were pardoned on account of their youth". Hedley assumed Humphrey Lisle was only about thirteen years old in 1521 when the canons of Bridlington "asserted themselves and occupied the tithe corn and when sir William heard of this 'he sent his son and servant (called Jowsey) to turn them out; on which they killed him (the canon) with their swords'". No father would send a 13-year-old son to deal with a hot button issue like that. Maybe an 18-year-old son. This evidence suggests that Humphrey was born no later than 1503.

Hedley's Delaval article is basically taken word-for-word from the 1909 Delaval pedigree in History of Northumberland Volume 9. There, Sir John Delaval "was 40 years of age at his father's death" (so born by 1523). He couldn't have been born much before that date as his father was "born 16 April 1498". Sir John's wife is "Anne, or Agnes, widow of Sir Humphrey Lisle, and dau. of Ralph, Lord Ogle", and cites "Flower's Visitation of Yorkshire, 1563/4" as it's source. The original pedigrees taken by the herald William Flower in 1563/4 and 1567 were published in Visitations of the North Part II. There is neither a Delaval nor an Ogle pedigree. So actually what HoN used in 1909 was the Harleain Society's Delaval pedigree from it's 1881 Visitation of Yorkshire, where "John Delavale Esquyer = Agnes doter of the Lord Ogle".

Given that: a) the latest that Anne Ogle, daughter of the 3rd Baron Ogle, could have been born is 1513 (the year he died); b) all chronological evidence points to the children of the 3rd Lord Ogle born earlier than that, in the timespan of 1490 to 1505; c) Humphrey Lisle of Felton appears to have been born no later than 1503; d) Sir John Delaval appears to have been born a full generation later, in the early 1520s; e) so far there isn't a 16th-century original document that confirms Lisle and Delaval were married to the same lady; and f) the (presumably 16th-century) source of the 1881 Harleain Society Delaval pedigree states that Sir John Delaval's wife's first name not 'Anne' but 'Agnes', and we know that the 4th Lord Ogle had a daughter by that name who works perfectly chronologically - I'm going on the assumption in my database that the 3rd Lord Ogle had a daughter Anne married to Humphrey Lisle of Felton (c.1503-bef.1542), and the 4th Lord Ogle's daughter Agnes was the one who was married to Sir John Delaval (by 1523-1572).

[*2] The most recent pedigree of the Blounts of Mapledurham can be found in BLG 17th Edition (1952), p. 2158, sub Riddell of Cheeseburn Grange. It states that William Blount of Kidmore End (d. 1676) married "Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Ralph Delaval, Bt., of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland". Sir Ralph Delaval, 1st Baronet was born 13 October 1622, and Lyster Blount, the son of William Blount & Elizabeth Delaval, was born in 1654. It's chronologically impossible for a man born in 1654 to have been the grandson of one born in 1622. So William Blount's wife Elizabeth cannot have been the daughter of the first, or any subsequent, Delaval baronet.

Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland

The 1909 Delaval pedigree in HoN (followed by Hedley) doesn't show any Delaval daughter married to a William, or any, Blount. The 1979 book Village Education in Nineteenth-Century Oxfordshire by Pamela Horn (available on snippet view thru Google Books) states on p. 52, that William Blount's wife Elizabeth "was daughter of Sir Ralph Delaval of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland", and that Elizabeth Delaval Blount was living in 1685, a widow and a Papist.

Going back to the 1909 Delaval pedigree, Sir Ralph Delaval (by 1577-1628), the grandfather of the 1st Baronet, did have a daughter Elizabeth, born in 1615, but per the pedigree, she died unmarried in 1629, a month before her 14th birthday. Looking closely at the pedigree, the likeliest Elizabeth Delaval to have been the wife of William Blount, is Sir Ralph Delaval's niece Elizabeth, "baptized 11th August, 1623; living unmarried, 2nd August, 1650", a daughter of his younger brother Robert Delaval of Cowpen. This works well chronologically, as William Blount could not have been born prior to 1620 (his father's first wife died in November 1619), and Lyster Blount, the couple's elder son, was born in 1654, just four years after Elizabeth Delaval was reported living unmarried. This is how I have it in my database, with a note that further research is needed.

Luckily, my conjectural Line B above is the trickiest of Agnes Mary Eyston Western's ancestral lines. My next post will look in detail at the Edward III lines for Maria Teresa Metcalfe (see A11 above), who is a descendant of St Thomas More through her father, and of his adversary Thomas, Lord Cromwell, through her mother.
