{70} Edward IV Descents for 11th Baroness Wentworth (1792-1860)

11th Baroness Wentworth (1792-1860),
about the time she received the Barony
Anne Isabella 'Annabella' Milbanke was an enlightened woman of the Regency period. Per her entry in the ODNB, "She was brought up to be concerned for the workers and tenants of the estate and helped establish a school in Seaham. An early reader, Annabella Milbanke was especially interested in mathematics and astronomy, which she studied with a Cambridge tutor; new ideas on magnetism and phrenology fascinated her." She met the famous poet Lord Byron in 1812 - she was twenty and he was twenty-four. She rejected his first marriage proposal, but maintained regular correspondence with him, so that when he came to visit her at Seaham Hall, the estate of her parents in county Durham, she accepted his second proposal and they married there. On the first day of their honeymoon at Halnaby Hall, Yorkshire (another Milbanke family estate), the new groom showed his bride a love letter he'd received from his half-sister Augusta (Byron) Leigh, and told her the only reason he married her was revenge for her previous refusal - Annabella would never have his love. Eleven months later, in December 1815, she gave birth to their only child, and four weeks afterwards, Lord Byron sent his wife and the newborn back to her parents, and never saw either again. The couple were legally separated in April 1816, and Annabella devoted herself to her daughter Ada Byron, who inherited Annabella's love for mathematics, and is famous today as one of the pioneers of computer science. But Annabella's own main interest was in developing education for the underprivileged, improving slum conditions, discussing rights for women, and the anti-slavery movement.

At the death of her cousin Baron Scarsdale in 1856, Annabella, Lady Byron, as the last surviving grandchild of the 1st Viscount Wentworth of Wellesborough, had the abeyance of the 300-year-old barony of Wentworth of Nettlestead terminated in her favour. Her daughter Ada having died of cancer four years prior, Lady Byron would pass the Wentworth barony on to Ada's elder son at her own death in May 1860, at the age of 67. Several modern writers, who idolize Lord Byron, have judged his wife unfavourably, which is the opposite of how she was viewed by her own family and friends, one of whom described her as "one of those pure spirits, little valued by the world, though worshipped by those who knew her well."

[*2] Robert Surtees was unable to further identify Ralph Hedworth's wife Anne in his 1820 pedigree of Hedworth of Chester Deanery, and I've had no further luck in 2016.

The next blogpost will cover a line from Edward III to the 11th Baroness Wentworth that is an addition to Ruvigny's Mortimer-Percy volume.

Cheers,                           ------Brad
